Construction again.....the beginning anyways.

Few weeks ago we started building my friends new house.  Its going to be quite large.  2 stories and a full basement.  In the end there will be a grand total of 40 windows.  Money has slowed us down a bit and its behind schedule.  So far only 2 of the first floor falls are up.  Just raised them this afternoon.  So not much to look at yet.  Will post more as it progresses

Basement with 6 rooms.  Quite spacious really.  Right now its a little wet though.

Stood back as far as I could and still couldnt get it in full frame.  The front wall standing all lonely for now.  Hopefully start framing more tomorrow.  Will be quite tall when we get on the roof.  Already standing on the first floor we are even with the top of the barn doors.  Second floor will look completely over it.  But at this rate it will be awhile before we even get that far.  Our crew consists of whoever can help whenever they feel like it  Contractors would be a bit to expensive.  Cost almost 20 grand just for the basement


Quite a big difference from the one we are building for vocational.  Its coming along nicely though and will be finished in a couple weeks.  The open house is on the 11th.  Will try to get some pictures of it before to long.  Been to busy to take a trip out that way  ;)  So hopefully will have a set to post before open house.  Wont be totaly trimmed but will be close  Really can't believe that school only has 3 weeks left

One of the downsides to this location is you have to watch where you walk on the property.  Was out for a little walk before I left and heard something running up behind me.  Looked back to find one of the bulls charging me.  Ended up having to repair a fence after that one  Just about needed a change of pants too  Theres 4 and only that one will charge

Anyways...more to come from both houses in a couple weeks.  For now I need to get some supper

Nice scenery! Looks a bit like where I live.

But a question... why do you Americans love to build all wood houses? In Belgium it's all brick and tiles... there are hardly any wood houses. Are they as strong as brick houses? That keeps going trough my mind whenever I see the damage a tornado or hurricane can do on your continent.

Its deffinatly not as strong as a brick house.  But its cheaper and easier to build.  Problem with tornados is they tend to do their fare share of damage no matter what a house is built out of.  This house will accualy have some brickwork around the outside.  But for the most part it will be wood and siding.  It would take forever with our crew to build this house out of brick due to its size.  3 of us built and raised that front wall in under an hour, had that been brick would have taken forever  Plus there are other considerations as to why wood is a better choice.  As the house settles throughout the years wood will bend and can be controled with floor jacks, bricks and mortar would just crumble.

Lot's of houses now are being built with steel frame walls, and some even have poured concrete walls, but wood framing is still the most popular and in my opinion, one of the best ways to do it.
