Rwy 4 Recon at KEWR

Postby beaky » Mon May 01, 2006 8:40 pm

So yesterday I decided to get on a bicycle, of all things (been a long time, but I used to be hardcore), and see how close I could get to the north edge of the airport. Needless to say, as I wheeled the bike out onto the street, the KLM 747 was roaring up off Rwy 4L, looking georgeous- no time to get the camera ready. Oh well... the worst part was that they were landing way at the south end of the field- no good; even less bike-accessible.
Turned out to be a lovely evening for a ride; thought I would get very close, but my planned route did not foresee this:

Doubled back a little; past my old spotting area...never been this way before.

This looks good. No used condoms... how nice!

And may I present:

Cool shots.

Just for fun I tried see which types they were, I came up with the following (chronological order)

ERJ170 (not 737 engines, and not airbus winglets)
B737NG (737-800)
ERJ140(?), atleast it's one of those.
JetBlue Airbus A320 (not sure of version)
America West

Newark is renowned for its street crime, very much so... but unless they have bicycles, they ain't gonna catch me. And where I went, there's nobody around.
I was once bushwacked by 1/2 dozen or so hoodlums not far from my house (their prize? My wallet, empty! Haha!); wouldn't have happened if I was on wheels. I should ride more.
I'm glad you like the shoes. Very comfy Reeboks; my next pair will be Vans- even better.

Pretty sure my heart was at about 140 when I stumbled through the door... but at least I didn't even want a cigarette the whole time. Interesting. ;D

Good, you should stop smoking anyway!!!!  Besides in the Communist state of New Jersey that we live in, your not aloud to smoke anywhere inside most buildings and soon you won't be aloud to smoke within 25 feet of a building.  I'm not a smoker but, thats going a little to far.  Sorry I went political on you. Won't happen again!!! ;D

Very rarely see anything else coming in to Newark. Sometimes I'll hear a piston twin practicing approaches or something in the wee hours or on a claggy day, but that's it other than the big boys.

Can't get very close at all, although there is the service road by the north cargo terminals... but I'm not sure how to get there safely on a bike. I'll stick with this new spot- it'll be very good for watching and photographing landings.

You guys are a tough crowd... I just thought that photo was interesting; now you're making fun of my Reeboks. I'll have you know that's a quality sneaker... what's on your feet, eh?

I used to wear Reeboks exclusively back when I dressed like everyone else.

PS: Oh yeah, about the shots...  I love the dilapidated feel of #2. ;)
