The weather wasn't too good today so here's some photos I took earlier.
This is a familiar sight from the main A27 & I keep meaning to stop & take a few photos. Well, after a visit to Goodwood about a month ago I finally did.

View from the bridge over the River Arun looking north towards the South Downs.


Panning west towards the town of Arundel.


The town is overlooked by Arundel Castle, apparently the second largest castle in the country & still occupied by the Duke of Norfolk.



A little further west is the magnificent Arundel Cathedral. Built for the fifteenth Duke of Norfolk in 1873 to designs by Joseph Hansom. His main claim to fame is as the inventor of the Hansom cab.



I think Felix might like the last shots. makes a change from Lancing College chapel. We're rather spoiled for imposing buildings around here.

In the first two shots I take it the boats do not go under the stone bridge at the top of the picture?

I notice a few ladders going down to the water, there must be quite a few boats missing, would people use their boats to go to work?

Inless you live on an island or you work on a boat then few people use them as a means of going to work. As for the ladders without boats, the chances are that either the boat is out of the water for the winter or they simply don't own one.

Boats do go under that bridge Doug. The river is navigable for several miles further upstream but only to the smaller boats. The tide is high in my photos & the level will drop by several feet over a few hours. It might not look it but the Arun is one of the fastest flowing rivers in England.

I doubt it. Woody already gave the most likely reason. This is mainly a tourist & leisure area. Most of the boats are kept in the marinas at Littlehampton harbour where the river meets the sea.

It would seem all inland rivers are influenced by the tide.

Here in Canada we do not see the tidal effects unless we are on one of the coasts.

We being on a major inland river, there is still no major effects as far as tide goes.

In land rivers are only influenced by the tide if they are within the tidal range above sea level. That's to say anywhere between five and fifteen metres. Also bare in mind that you're never all that far away from the coast in England.
