Spring has sprung! part 4

Postby beaky » Mon Apr 03, 2006 7:07 pm

Well, Stroudsberg, a planned stop, is also nixed: too much traffic for a rusty pilot with a nervous first-timer on a windy day- including jumpers... I will confess I did not get a live briefing, so there may have been a NOTAM for this (N53 normally does not have jump ops, as far as I know).
But I was listening to the CTAF as soon as I cleared the ridge, so no problem.
I decide to make a beeline home, with maybe a stop at Solberg.

I have another try at tuning a radial to simplify things for better time, but I still can't figure out how to switch it so the freq. knobs control the nav half of this old box instead of comm. Only flown this puppy once before, and only in the pattern.

As I settle on a rough heading, I realize it's such a fine day, I can see the reservoir near Solberg from here, about 30 miles away. So I forget the VOR, and ease 7QJ into a shallow power glide back down to 2500, hoping to pick up a little time.

But it's not needed, really- the tailwind whips us along (no GPS and no time or inclination to calculate groundspeed, so... no tall tales, here), and soon I'm making my first approach since the end of January at Solberg. It was not too shabby. The last one shows the moment of touchdown.

Next: only two, but it'll do

Nice shots Rotty :)

Makes me want to go flying again after a five month hiatus that has done god know's what to my training-but I got all As and Bs this quarter, I'll be back in the saddle in no time (I know you've all been dying for an update)

Okay Sean...now what you should have done is handed your passenger an old tooth brush upon landing and told him he had to go back and remove the black marks off the runway where you touched down ;DLOL
That way you would not be charged landing fees ::)

All in all you are having a good time which is great ;)

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug
