I was going to say the American registration. :P

Ah, that would have been a tad too easy. ;)

Tell me it isn't true Doug :'( This has to be some kind of cruel joke. As far as I know there have been no recent incedents on Popham, why now?

It's true I'm afraid Pete. This has been looming for a long time now. I'm surprised they managed to get away with it for so long.

Might that be a way for a lightning in the skies over the UK? I've thought of it before... maybe even a South african registration?

No such luck. The regulations are becoming stricter if anything.  It makes no difference where the aircraft is registered as the CAA quite rightly controls civil airspace over the UK.

Why would people keep their planes on the americac registration while flying in britain?

It's to do with either night flying or instrument flying. I think if you get the ppl rating in the USA you can fly an Nreg plane in the UK and use the rating, BUT if you fly a G reg plane you can't.
A short while ago there was talk of banning non G reg planes living in the UK. :o
If your not part of the answer    your part of the problem!

I don't think it has anything to do with the flying side of it Chris. Purely a maintenance thing. AFAIK

Most of the larger UK maintenance organisations now have dual JAA/FAA approvals.
