Looking for a new toy...

Postby Boss_BlueAngels » Sun Mar 05, 2006 6:27 pm

Since my dad's camera that I've been using for my airshow photography is on the fritz, I've decided to begin a long, slow search for a new camera.

I've decided on the Canon Rebel 350D.  I'm goin' digital baby!  I would be using my dads 75-300mm lense until I can save up even more money to get something more powerful.

Anyway, anyone in here have experience using this camera?  I've read dozens of reviews and looks like a great camera.

BTW (I won't be buying the thing for at least another 4 months. lol)

I'm still getting used to my new toy but I don't think you'll regret it. ;)

I know several of my fellow photographers who use the 350d, and they are very happy with it so I'd say its certainly worth getting :)

I treated myself to it for my birthday. Now I have to learn how to use those manual settings to my advantage. I might post a few of my efforts later. Still practicing so I don't have much to show for it so far. ::)

A member on a Belgian forum gave me the advice to start by using the shutterspeed priority. This way you only have to deal with the shutterspeed, as the aperature is set automatically. I've used the manual settings alot allready, great fun and satisfying on still objects, but fast moving aircraft tend to be somewhat difficult. It's easier to concentrate on only one parameter and learn the other settings by experience!

I also read the lense that comes with the package isn't the best, so don't get dissapointed by it. The camera is a jewel.

Have fun Doug!

I'd say the kit lense is pretty darn good for the cost of it. The realistic view you have to take with DSLR's is they are an investment. Like a car or a large loan. A very good lense can cost hundreds and even thousands of

That's the big scare when it comes to SLR's. When I'd have to buy a Canon with a decent lense that can do the things I can with my Panasonic FZ5, i'd have lost a lot of money. But still, one can't deny the impressive quality of the DSLR camera's! If I have the funds one day, I'll happily hop over to that side...  ;D

Omag, the first thing you need to know is that lenses and the camera are only part of an impressive picture from a DSLR. You actually have to do alot of post processing to get the perfect pictures. In some cases you'll get a good picture from the camera right away. But they dont do the in camera processing you get from the normal cameras.
This is more just a heads up if you come to buy one.

I agree Craig... and with my supertele compact, I have to do even more post-processing!  ;D  Darn noise!

But, reading about the actual sensors and the surface difference between the different types of camera's, I'd like to think the DSLR has an advantage!

But then again, even the best tool used wrong will produce poor quality...  ;)

Of course, in the end you'll get much better pictures. Just look at the work from F3, and Bones, Bone uses the 300D like myself, and it proves that camera can still hold its own. But it does just require a little more effort thats all:) I'd advise anyone who could afford one to buy one, I am sure any other user here would.

Seems we agree. Though I'm quite happy with what I got at the moment. After all, a couple of months ago i even didn't know I liked photography. The digital camera let's me play all that I want, fast results, fast learning, pure enjoyment!

But my girlfriend ( who bought me the camera with my parents) wasn't sure about it and 1.000,00 Euro's is a rather large budget when you've bought a house that costed well over hundred thousand euro's last year...
