More Goodwood

Postby Hagar » Sun Feb 05, 2006 6:39 pm

One of the famous pilots to fly from here during WWII when it was a satellite airfield of RAF Tangmere.*

Of course, Goodwood is more famous for horse & motor racing than aeroplanes. This is the top of the stand overlooking the motor racing circuit. The clock must have stopped. I took this at about 4 pm. Ray Hanna used to fly his Spitfire along here so low you could look down on it from where I'm standing to take this shot. We shall never see that again.

*PS. Goodwood airfield was named RAF Westhampnett during WWII.

I'm liking the E-Type and what I believe is a DB-5 in the 3rd shot. :)

Don't mind if I do. You know, in all the years I've seen that name plastered all over the place that thought had never occurred to me. ::) ;)

Glorious Goodwood indeed Doug.

I assume that's Stumpy, wasn't he flying from Tangmere when he was shot down and captured?

I've been reading 'Spitfire into battle' by W.G.G Duncan Smith (father of the famous twins Iain and Duncan). And he describes the effect on morale when he was shot down. He also talks about some of the other 'greats' he flew with, like Eric Lock (who was from near where I live), and Don Kingaby, who scored the first kill on a FW190, etc etc.

It is indeed Douglas Bader although I've never heard him referred to as Stumpy before. :o He took off from Westhampnett (Goodwood) on August 9, 1941, for what would be his last wartime mission.

I've also read that book recently.

I know Doug, it's obnoxious of me, I saw him referred to as such (unkindly) and it's always stuck in my mind. I shall try to educate myself out of it ;)

They had some pictures of him at North Weald from the day of the post-war RAF flypast of London, strange to think of him wandering through the same rooms. Well worth a visit.
