Very nice photos! The Mustang is also my favourite warbird. You have many European tangs in this thread. I've only seen Twilight Tear (first photo) doing a heritage flight with a F-15...the others I'll probably see in Duxford next year. Don't you have any of Ferocious Frankie? Love that one...actually I love the entire OFMC...but Frankie rocks!

Thanks again for all the generous comments :)

I like the P-51 but, any of a P-47?

Don't you have any of Ferocious Frankie?

I have pics of both indeed, albeit in smaller quantities than the other aircraft I have posted. I will try and sort some out of both tomorrow (in 2006! :D) :)

I won't be online again tonight so farewell to you all and see you in 2006! ;D ;D

Actually, the Mustang is British!
The P-51 was designed as the NA-73 in 1940 at Britain's request. The design showed promise and AAF purchases of Allison-powered Mustangs began in 1941 primarily for photo recon and ground support use due to its limited high-altitude performance. But in 1942, tests of P-51s using the British Rolls-Royce "Merlin" engine revealed much improved speed and service ceiling, and in Dec. 1943, Merlin-powered P-51Bs first entered combat over Europe.
Strangely, I was always under the impression that the Sopwith Camel was British. Now I realize that, having either a Clerget or LeRhone engine, it was French. Plus, when a certain German ace admired the LeRhone engine he'd had mounted in his Fokker Dr-1, he was proud of his little French plane! :D
Now, more than ever, products are made with imported parts... and are often assembled in a country other than the one in which the company they're made for is in. Commerce runs the world. ;) 8)

It might have been designed to meet a British specification but the design team & engineers were all American. The head of the design team Edgar Schmued was actually a German immigrant.

Yes but the Engine is a Merlin, which is British. The first Mustangs had the Alison engine and were quite poor. The Mustang only became great when partnered with the Merlin...

If you wish to be pedantic the P-51D is powered by the Packard Merlin which was manufactured in the US & Canada. The Packard Merlin was also fitted to the Spitfire XVI & the Lancaster Mk III. ;)

Many Boeing airliners are powered by Rolls-Royce engines but that doesn't make them British. :D

I think our American members might argue with that. ;)

Thank you, sir... and for the record, one of the things I always liked about the Mustang was that it was an Allied design project, if you will... that may be unique, for WWII at least. And Schmued's participation adds another interesting wrinkle... but regardless, it was a huge success, and just plain beautiful.

And thank you, F3, for those terrific shots! More 'Stangs!!  ;D

No, just semi-British... ;)
[You've got to take all the credit you can get these days! So well done Rolls_Royce! ;D ;)]

Should I mention that a B model is nearly fully restored at Duxford now.... I think it'll be flying this summer ;)

Cool! Who owns it, the Fighter Collection? With this one, they'll have a B, C and D model.  8)

Thanks for heads-up. Now maybe I can finally get some decent shots of it at Old Warden. ;)
