I resize all the photos I post here with IrfanView. It's a matter of trial & error but most are fine at 800 pixel width with very little compression although I sometimes crop the height to reduce file size & get more images in a topic. It really depends on the photo. I find that the aerial shots against the sky need far less compression than others with scenery in the background. Large amounts of grass & trees seem to be the biggest culprit.

I originally resized them to 800 but they were like 80kb and 8 of them would have been over the limit. They were quite heavy when I had compressed them aswell. (They are originally about 2400 pixels wide)

It's all a matter of compromise. You can post 5 images at 100 kb each or more smaller ones in a single topic. If it's quality you're after there's no reason you can't post them in several topics.
