Balsa-EZ part five: Canard and Winglets

The canard. I thought about making this piece out of solid balsa, but that would have been way too easy. ;)

The ribs were so small that it was easier just to cut them out as rough square shapes, and then sand them down.

Here it is will all ribs attached and ready for sanding.

I realized at the last minute that I didn't have any pictures of the completed canard, so here it is sitting on top of the winglet plan, with a completed winglet in the back ground.

The winglets. I thought about making these solid also, but again, it would be too easy. Here is the basic frame layed out and glued.

It is so small that I didn't even bother making special rib pieces. I just glued some stringers on like so and sanded to shape.

And here it is sanded to the right shape. You may notice that my plan calls for part of the winglet to extend below the wing. That part actually proved very difficult to work with, so I decided to make the winglets go up only. Of the many Long-EZs that I have seen, no two have had the exact same winglets anyway.

And the is pretty much where I am at the moment. The winglets are absent from this photo because they aren't attached to the wingtips yet.

My next step will be landing gear. the struts will probably be metal, and the tires will either be R/C plane tires, or balsa that I will laminate with epoxy so they will be strong and not get flat spots from sitting on my shelf. :P After that, I will join all of the components together, and then cover it.
