Tight squeeze

I forgot all about these. I popped over to Shoreham for lunch with an old friend on Thursday. The weather was awful but I took my camera just in case. This is what we were confronted with on arrival. Looks like A RAF Jetstream (thought it was a Dominie at first) but it was a tad chilly round the ol' lug'oles so we left them to it & repaired to the restaurant at this point. Carry on with the good work chaps.







It looks a bit of a tight squeeze but we assumed they're trying to fit it in the hangar. Not sure about that fin though. Will it, won't it? I'm sure they measured it first. Hope so anyway. This brought back memories of when I was involved with trying to fit rather large & awkward shaped pegs into inadequately sized square holes. No rude comments Mark. I didn't ask what it was all about as they looked a tad busy at the time.

I shall endeavour to find out.

I finally worked that out after a lot of interesting experiments.

No sign of anything resembling wings. When we went for a peek after a very nice lunch everything was back to normal. It was only by chance that we arrived just as they were unloading it. This blocked our way to the restaurant so we had to make a slight detour.

That hangar is part of the Northbrook Aeronautical College. I suspect the Jetstream will be used for general training of airframe engineers. They have restored a couple of aircraft to airworthy condition over the years but the only one I'm familiar with is the Tiger Moth "Spirit of Pashley" as a tribute to my old boss, the one & only Cecil Pashley.

Amazing how rakish she still looks, even stripped of wings and hanging off a sling.... nice.
As for the fin: if you look closer at the last pic, I believe there's a moveable/removable section in the center of the doorway for just that piurpose (that is a seam, right?)... but I guess they felt confident, or they'd have opened it beforehand.

You're quite right of course & most hangars have a similar opening. It's long time since I worked with complete aeroplanes & I forgot about that.

PS. Moving aircraft is a skilled job. I recall one incident when the operations manager of our small airline was in charge of steering with the towbar. He misjudged it & wiped the aerials off the top off the fin of our Islander. It's a good job he did it himself or someone else would have got a rocket.
