First, here's some shots of the historic town of Arundel itself. I parked close to the White Hart pub which according to the sign was established in 1790. Plenty of nice old pubs around here & with the castle which overlooks the town in the background.
This is the bridge over the river Arun after which the town is named. It's a tad muddy after the recent bad weather & although it looks calm enough now this is one of the fastest flowing rivers in England.
Some of the more modern buildings along the waterfront with Arundel Cathedral in the background. Built in 1893 it was designed by a Mr Joseph Hansom, more famous for the Hansom cabs which were the forerunners of the modern London taxis. I must go up there one day & take some photos.
This is the old town just across the bridge.
A little further on into the old town looking up the hill towards part of the castle. This used to be the main road before the bypass was built a few years ago. Note the Norfolk Arms, another old pub named after the Dukes of Norfolk. The present Duke still lives in the castle which might seem odd as Arundel is in Sussex & a long way from Norfolk. Put it down to English eccentricity.
Next stop Swanbourne Lake just a short walk from here to find some typical Sussex scenery.
