Local beauty spot

Postby Hagar » Sat Nov 05, 2005 8:06 pm

It's been a while since I posted any photos. After seeing Rottydaddy's photos of his part of the world in Autumn I decided to take a little trip to a local beauty spot at Arundel. There's a very nice avenue of trees which usually looks beautiful at this time of year but we've had some strong gales recently & I feared it would be too late. More of that later.

First, here's some shots of the historic town of Arundel itself. I parked close to the White Hart pub which according to the sign was established in 1790. Plenty of nice old pubs around here & with the castle which overlooks the town in the background.

This is the bridge over the river Arun after which the town is named. It's a tad muddy after the recent bad weather & although it looks calm enough now this is one of the fastest flowing rivers in England.

Some of the more modern buildings along the waterfront with Arundel Cathedral in the background. Built in 1893 it was designed by a Mr Joseph Hansom, more famous for the Hansom cabs which were the forerunners of the modern London taxis. I must go up there one day & take some photos.

This is the old town just across the bridge.

A little further on into the old town looking up the hill towards part of the castle. This used to be the main road before the bypass was built a few years ago. Note the Norfolk Arms, another old pub named after the Dukes of Norfolk. The present Duke still lives in the castle which might seem odd as Arundel is in Sussex & a long way from Norfolk. Put it down to English eccentricity. ::) ;)

Next stop Swanbourne Lake just a short walk from here to find some typical Sussex scenery.

Some interesting architecture there, Doug. Looks like a nice day, too. :)

Sure tis a lovely town ...... as for the English penchant for naming dukes, out of county for want of a better way of putting it, it all comes down to when the King would give lands in return for the gentlemens services.

A lord living in Sussex would be given lands and the title in Norfolk in return for raising an army to go fight there ... more especially if they won the battle. A quaint thing ... no ... more a way of the King holding onto power and keeping the surfs in order.

We have a strange one here in Derbyshire .... Chatsworth house is the home of the Duke of Devonshire. However in this case, it seems that the Monarch on the day of the first  Duke's investiture was ment to have made him the Duke of Derbyshire but got it wrong and invested him as the Duke of Devonshire.

Lovely shots. Shame about all the cars on the old main street though. This country will become a huge car park one day...
