Grumpy at the Grand Canyon

Postby Hagar » Tue Oct 18, 2005 12:02 pm

Rottydaddy's New Mexico series reminded me of my trip to the Grand Canyon some years ago. I found a few photos I scanned with my old scanner & thought you might like to see them. We visited the unspoiled end of the Canyon which is on a reservation proudly run by the Hualapai Tribe (pronounced Wallopye). No hotels, no railings, no aeroplanes flying around - nothing but the magnificent Grand Canyon in all its natural splendour. Wonderful. :D

This is our guide who stopped the bus, then walked right to the edge of the canyon, jumped up & down a couple of times & said; "Right who's next?"

I was never one to resist a challenge so here's me, a slightly younger Grumpy, standing next to him. One step back & it's a mile drop. No kidding. :o
No, I'm not quite as bandy-legged as it looks in this shot. :P

This is outside the restaurant which is actually the old winding house for a cable car that once ran right across the canyon. Yes, those picnic tables are right on the edge of the Grand Canyon itself.

The mighty Colorado river which looks like a muddy stream.

No photo can possibly do justice to this magnificent sight. Truly Awesome with a capital A. ;)

Wonderful memories. I have a few more photos but not as many as I would have wished.

Wow, one of the places on my "must visit before I get too old" list. Probably never will though.
Great photos Hagar old pal. :)

LOL- you've been holding out! You've probably seen more of the SW than I have.
Are your knees knocking together in shot #2? LOL!!

Hehehehe. ;) You could be right but I have a bad habit of bending my knees when posing next to someone shorter than me which actually explains the bandy look. I felt quite confident with that wonderful man standing beside me. If you look closely he has a hand on my back just in case, so I felt perfectly safe. He's not as fierce as he looks either & had a wonderful sense of humour. Once he knew that my daughter & I came from England he never stopped taking the mickey out of us. I wouldn't have missed that trip for the world. :D

PS. If you're thinking of visiting the Grand Canyon, take a tip from your old mate Grumpy. Forget the commercialised end with McDonalds & all that stuff. Pay a visit to the Hualapai & let them show you what it's really like. You won't regret it & will remember the experience for the rest of your days. Trust me. ;)

Ah the Grand Canyon...One of the most beautiful spots in the southwest IMHO :)

Was there in 2001.  Though we were somewhere near the middle i do believe...We took the train in from Flagstaff.  So where ever the first station was located :P  Still remember people brave enough to stand on the little wall...windy day and wasnt the smartest of ideas.  Still want to go back eventualy ;)

If it wasnt for the whole...death...part, i think it would be fun just to run and dive in :P
