Vikings. (Theis would approve)

Postby Woodlouse2002 » Sun Oct 02, 2005 7:01 pm

More photo's from my travels. This time from the Vikingskip Museet in Oslo. These are original viking ships dug up from burial mounds in Norway. And considering they spent over 1000 years underground I think they're fecking amazing. The museum was a tad dark, as you can see from the first photo, but a slight tweak of the settings and I managed to produce some good, if slightly blurry (on occasions) photo's.

This is what you're presented with as you walk into the museum. A fantastic sight I think you'll agree.
Image

It was here I gave the settings a tweak and I was quite satisfied with the results.
Image

So satisfied actually that I went back and started again. ;D
Image

This is another of their boats (they have three in total, though the third is not nearly so good as these two). It's thought that while the first one was a ceremonial boat, this one was the type they went a-raiding in as it's a more seaworthy design.
Image

Another view of the second ship.
Image

This ones a bit blurry, but then with a 3 second exposure, a flash and no tripod, I defy anyone to do better. These are little viking dinghys found in pieces in one of the ships. The museum put them together and here they are for all to see.
Image

A nice one of the steering oar of the second longboat.
Image

Well, hope you enjoyed. Cause I went to three other museums that day and I got photographs from all of them. ;D ;D ;D

Wicked cool... I love Viking longboats.  Remarkable carpentry, and very fine ships for their purpose.

Very nice Woody. Maybe you can give me some tips on those settings. This is just the sort of thing I'd like to know.

On the wheel on your camera there should be a setting with a moon and a star. I used that with the flash.
