It's obvously a stunt or the photographer wouldn't have been there. ;)

If it's a genuine B/W photo it was possibly taken some years ago.

So he turns the prop by hand?

I'd have thought , not being a real pilot, that diving would have turned the propeller enough to start the engine again.....

I suppose I'm missing something vital here!

Somebody explain please! I'm thinking along the lines of bump starting a car / truck... ???

It's a stunt Paul. People do this for fun - or the publicity. :P ;D

According to Bob Hoovers book Forever Flying, hanging out the door of a Cub causes it to yaw severely to that side. So the guy in this picture would have to have someone in the pilots (aft) seat to hold opposite rudder while he did this. Mr. Hoover had done this sort of thing with a gas can for in flight re-feuling.
