LOL... funny that he'd rather try to fix  things in mid-air than make an engine-out landing... in a Cub of all things. Very curious as to the story behind this- was it just for lauf=ghs? Some kind of record attempt where landing would disqualify him?    ???

Unfortunatley I have no idea as to the story behind this picture - maybe it was just a set up stunt.

All I know is that I wouldn't like to be climbing out of that fiddly little 'Cub' door whilst flying along.

Does a cub even have an electric starter?

Not sure, but i'd feel so sorry for the guy if he managed to climb out there, fix the problem, get back in - & then remember that there was no electric start.

Can you imagine his little face - it'd be a picture  ;D

Not sure but he may have stepped out to add a quart of oil as well.

Aircraft like the DeHaviland DHC-2 Beaver you could add oil from within the cockpit below the throttle, pitch and mixture control consol.

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

I've seen that photo somewhere while I was searching for J-3 info - yes, he's cranking the prop mid-flight.  Can't remember the guy's name though.
