the alternative

Postby Craig. » Tue Jul 12, 2005 3:14 pm

To Duxford that is. Well on the reasoning that Fairford was setup for this week we agreed to forego Duxford and try somewhere differant(ok so i am a little upset). So we went walking in the Malvern hills. Stupidly in my haste and thinking we would end up going to the local shopping centre as usual i didnt bring my camera.
I captured these using my mobile phone, thus the poor quality. I thought however a few might like to see them  anyway. It was a perfect day for walking there and a very nice place to visit.

The first one shows where Sir Edward Elgar got his inspiration from... :)

theres also what we believe to be an old airfield in the second. Its difficult to spot in the picture but was clear to see from the top of the hill. points to the one who can pick it out.

They look pretty good for having been taken with a phone. The second one almost looks like a painting... I don't know if thats good or bad :P

Very nice Craig. I don't know this part of the country. Is the old airfield to the far right of your photo?

correct Doug. Its the lighter coloured grass. The only thing that gave it away was the road system around it. Which is why i said it was difficult to pick out from the photo.

Thought so. Any idea what it was called? What town/village is that?

The second picture is the town of Great Malvern and the village of Wyche to the right, and you are facing east...

Took about a minute to find on Multimap, the light coloured field on the right and the L shaped field in the middle of the town were the givaways! ;D

Great Malvern/Wyche

Looking at the aerial photos I can't see any evidence of an airfield ...

Mmm, the super duper lists of UK airfields of the past has the nearest airfields to Great Malvern (Approx N52.06 W2.17) as having been Defford (N52.05 W2.08) and Berrow (N52 W2.17)...

Inconclusive I think....

In the end its just a guess as, like i said, the layout from the angle we were at looked alot like an old airbase. I couldn't find anything on it either. And perhaps there were plans at one point to build one there building started but was later aborted. It would certainly be an interesting place to put an airfield with the hills being around 3000 feet next to it.

Hmmm. I came up with Defford but it's an old Radar Research station apparently surrounded with "golf balls". Any of them out of shot?
