most of the bits go into the crowd unfortunatly..

Thankfully they don't - 50+ years of airshow regulation has prevented that from happening. The last (crowd) fatality at an airshow in the UK was in 1952, and in Europe in the mid 90s with the crash of the Royal Jordanian Falcons Extra 300. The lessons have been learnt now following accidents such as Rammstein. An example of this is you never now have the Red Arrows starting the show coming overhead the crowd. Also you won't see aircraft performing low, high energy manourvres in the directionm of the crowd line, and that they will never come closer than set minimum distances (depending on type) from the crowd (except take off/landing).

Of course the famous exception was the Ukraine crash a couple of years back, but to class that alongside mainstream airshows in the UK/Europe in terms of safety/organisation would be unfair.

Off the top of my head, in the last 10 years I can think of only 7 or 8 fatal accidents at UK airshows, and none which put the (legitimate) spectators in jeopardy.

Recently? I certainly can't think of any in recent history, bar the Ukraine Sukhoi crash - which was effectively an unauthorised (uncontrolled) display at an open event at an airfield, in no way regulated in the same way as western European shows.

The closest we've had in the UK would probably be the crash of the Fighter Collections P-30 Lightning at Duxford in July 1996, which crashed in a shallow dive whilst completing a series of low level aileron rolls. In that crash some of the wreckage came very close to vehicles on the M11 adjacent to the airfield. Of course that would have been solved easily in Cambridgshire council had the M11 built a quarter of a mile further east, and left Duxford airfield at its original size...

Found the vid, not quite sure if they work though, this comp doesn't have the right video players, and I'm not in the mood to download.

p.s if you can't find it, it's 3/4 down the page and has a somewhat small picture, and it's on the right.
