Sussex '94: The Teenie-Weenie Airport!

Roger Lenhert can certainly handle a J3... here he is landing one atop an 8x20 platform on top of a moving pickup truck- in a stiff crosswind, to boot!



He sticks it on, then carefully rolls forward to the stops- the truck slows gently until the tail comes down.


Backtaxi and repeat for takeoff! Cool!

I love it. That "carrier" looks even smaller than one we used to have at our local air display. I have my own shots somewhere but this will have to do for now.

Just bustin'; that's a very snazzy-looking rig there. Ramp looks a little bit longer, but not much. The one I showed is 8'x20'.

Anyone notice the subtle differences between them over the pond and us Americans over here?

I mean look at the car/truck/van pulling the different trailers....

Them over the pond gots a nice minivan, while us here in the states have to suffice with a beat up pickup! :-) Now if that ain't just redneck I don't know what is!

Don't bother me none! Good old American "can do", if you ask me!! That pickup ain't so beat-up, and at least it's not... a  minivan!!:-/

Seriously, I think the pickup-airport  is devastatingly simple and reliable. This is the design I would most want to drive, or land on. However, that trailer is a beautiful bit of custom work, so it ain't all bad...
Wait a sec! Howzabout a giant RV with a ramp on top like the pickup, and a nice  paint job like that trailer?!

I think the main difference is that at the time that photo was taken Martyn Carrington was a freelance display pilot & sponsored by Kia Cars. They took the opportunity to promote their product by designing that complete unit for him. It's towed by one of their Sedona "people carriers". I think it was advertised as the smallest aircraft carrier in the world. This might not have been strictly true but it certainly drew attention to their cars. Us lot over the pond are often very jealous of what you chaps have in the way of equipment. We have always had to "make do & mend" which I think explains our reputation for adaptability & inventiveness. This is not a particular talent but learned from years of bitter experience. We muddle through because we've had to for centuries.

To give credit where it's due, I should mention again that these frames were culled from the official videotape produced by the airshow organizers.  They always put on a great show, and the video makes a nice souvenir.
And speaking again of the comparison between the two "airports": the more I think about it, the less I like the trailer arrangement. But it is pretty, despite the use of a Kia minivan  :P .

Well, you'd have to come a long way to see Lenhert do it, but maybe that other guy is making the rounds in the UK this season. It really is fun to watch!
