It was more of a 'what was available during tuning' issue than anything. That and the guy lives on one airport, and works at another airport....
As for more power with 100LL, yes! The timing can be advanced much more, allowing for cleaner and more powerful combustion. Yes, there is lead, but since I'm one of the few using it, and I garentee that those DC-6's I see all the time use WAY more than I do, I don't feel the least bit bad.
Oh yeah, note the Cessna 140 elevator leaning behind the bike.
