I'm thinking it's not even "American" ... ???

It is not American. Nor is it British. Thats all the clues you're getting for now. ;)

Not quite.

Think weird, and stop trying to circle round the country of origin.

Wow... a whole new slant- Russian ironclads! Crazy, round Russian ironclads! Yes, I'm Googling... This is new to me, but very exciting!! Might it be perhaps... The Popov?

So close! It is infact the Popov's sister ship. The Novgorod.

http://web.ukonline.co.uk/aj.cashmore/r ... gorod.html

A circular Russian battleship built in 1873. Designed to give maximum stability for it's two guns. However, because of the shape the six propellers and twelve keels did not allow for easy steerage so both ships were used for coastal defence. ;D

You couldn't make it up. ;) :o 8)

Damn! I'd curse in Russian, but I only know one expression and can't spell it.
Those are sure some wacky ships. Put a couple palm trees on the deck and you'd think it was an island!  :D
I guess my consolation prize is my newfound knowledge of Russian naval history; my Russian grandfather would be proud.

I wouldn't curse too much. After all, either photo could be of either ship. After all, we're only taking the word of the websites we got the pictures off. ;)

I found this photo of them both together if that helps. http://web.ukonline.co.uk/aj.cashmore/russia/battleships/popov/viceadmiralpopov1.html

However, because of the shape the six propellers and twelve keels did not allow for easy steerage so both ships were used for coastal defence.

While on the subject of whose word to believe I've seen some accounts saying that they proved successful which seems to contradict this. The Tsar also had a private yacht based on the design. I believe this was built in a Scottish shipyard.
