Something different

Postby Hagar » Sun Sep 19, 2004 6:08 pm

Here's a very rare sight indeed. When I set out for Biggin Hill this morning I never expected anything like this. The Dornier is one of the most photogenic aircraft I've ever seen.

This Do 24 has been redesigned & fitted with turbine engines by Iren Dornier, the grandson of Dr Claude Dornier. It flies a treat.

I met a chap at the show who told me he took photos of it flying from the water at the Jersey Air Show. He mailed me the shots which are absolutely fantastic. I'll post some when I've resized them to show you what a proper photographer can do.

PS. Here's the full story behind this beautful aircraft. http://www.whatson-expat.com.ph/articles/2004/april25/headlines.htm

I love unusual and rare aircraft and the Dornier sure fits those catagories. Great shots and thanks for sharing.

What the history doesn't really say is that this plane isn't a new-build replica, this is a real Dornier Do-24, built in the 30's, used by Spain in SAR until not that long ago (in relative terms) and rebuilt as a technology demonstrator.  After serving it testing purposes, it was set up as a museum piece, and then re-restored to fare-paying flying status!

Great shots, expecially #2 of the Dornier.  I don't think I have ever actually seen a photo of that plane.  I've heard of them-but never seen one.  It sure is cool looking, deffinately a more graceful looking plane than the Catalina.

Those shots are divine Doug, I've never even seen the Dornier. I understand she only recently got back into the air...

I take my criticism back about the '24. I now want one of the modernized ones for FS. ;D
