G-VFWE - The Moths

Well, my other threads seem to have gone quiet but I haven't finished yet. Here's a few of the De Havilland Moth family.

Two examples of the little Hornet Moth.



The Leopard Moth. Very popular in its day. Unfortunately the similar Puss Moth didn't show up this year.


I've never seen a Fox Moth in the flesh before. Two turned up on the same day. This is the original layout with open cockpit for the poor old pilot. The cabin holds 4 passengers.


Someone fitted a nice teardrop canopy on this one. Some of the original DH paint schemes don't show up too well in photos.


Now some of my old favourite - the classic Tiger Moth. Immaculate example in original RAF markings.

The Queen Bee. An all-wood Tiger Moth originally used as an unmanned radio-controlled target drone. This one obviously survived. The only way I tell the difference is by the fixed slats on the upper wing. On a proper Tiger these are automatic & would be locked closed while taxying.


Hope you like my Moth collection. I'll try to get some better shots of DH types at the Moth Rally later in the year.

The Queen Bee was featured in an Air Enthusiast article a year or so ago.  The controller on the ground dialed in the "commands" using a telephone-type rotary dial.

The Queen Bee was the subject of an episode of Plane Crazy a while back, the other way to spot the QB is that it has a small armature with a prop and dynamo on it which powered the RC box in the cockpit.
I believe she is the only QB still flying, and the only other one in still in one piece is in a museum nowadays....

Of all Hagar's photos from G-VFWE posted here, the Queen Bee photo deserves a some cosmetic editing, particularly towards the center-right area: removal of the pink object can be easily justified.

Whens the next airshow you will be attending then?

I was debating North Weald this weekend. Still haven't made up my mind as it's all modern stuff. Theres plenty of other events this year. I'm spoiled for choice really.

From a photographic point of view - the composition of the Queen Bee photo is excellent (for me).  This is one case where if it were to be cropped, the overall balance of the photo would be tipped.

If it's a choice between cropping and leaving the object in, I would leave the object as is.

ah but modern stuff will get even more praise. Well from me at least your certainly lucky to have the ability to goto a number of them, i have a feeling i am going to have to choose between fairford and spending a ton of money for one day, or come home from college for 2 days to goto yeovil airshow in september tough choices

I'd like to have the fox moth and hornet moths for FS....great looking aircraft!  :)

I really wish I had these shots 15 yrs ago when I made a model of the Leopard Moth....it was for indoor flying and rubber powered.....wasn't such a good success, as I was still in the learnin' stage then.  It did fly for about 75 seconds consistent, but a few yrs later, I know I could have done much better........

I like the Hornet Moth best. Glad to see the Tiggys engine still goes the 'wrong' way!!
