1959 EP Cub

Postby Iroquois » Sun Apr 25, 2004 9:05 pm

Some of you may have noticed my Piper Cub avatar. For thoes of you who don't know. I'm building an 8% semi-scale Piper Cub. This perticular model was featured in a 1959 issue of Model Airplane News as a rubber band flyer. The same aircraft was re-released in R/C format in the January 2004 issue to celebrate Model Airplane News' 75th anniversery. It comes in two varieties. A indoor/park flyer or enlarge it 167% for an 8% scale fun flyer.

A view of the aft section starboard side. Only this side has been painted just to see how it looked.

A view of the aft port side. As you can see, the top panel still needs trimming. Here's a quick tip. Put rubbing alcohol and ammonia in a sprey bottle. Spray it on balsa for instant softening for shaping. Dries fast without warp.

In the paint department are the aft stabalizers painted cub yellow of course using TopFlite "LusterKote" spray paint.

The plan I'm working from. You may be able to order it from Model Airplane News but don't hold me on that.

Still got the wing and forward section to go. I've completed all the ribs but then I realised I bought the wrong size leading edge. Serves me right for not bringing a tape measure with me to the hobby store. Forward bulkheads 1 and 2 will be perticulary difficult because of the notches for the stringers in the nose. I have completed the landing gear as well.

I will probably be using all GWS equipment as recomended by the plans. These include an IPS 'A' drive with 9x7 prop, R4P receiver, 2 amp ESC, and 2 micro servos. Haven't decided on batteries yet. The model will have a 36'' span (approx 1 meter).

Got it out of FlyRC Magazine. BTW, you can still get the plan. You can order the back issue from the MAN website for $5.99USD.

very good start Orenda!

one of the instructors in my soaring club has been world champion in this branch. he has an amazing Starfighter and an ooo sooo sweet F-16...both with a real jet turbine...man what a sound. if you want to see it in real life, you'll have to take a stop at EBZR
