Holiday fun

Postby Hagar » Mon Apr 12, 2004 3:23 pm

Despite the weather forecasters' best efforts the weather's been grand here all over the holiday.

I've visited Shoreham Airport several times over the long weekend & taken something like 500 photos while I was out & about in the sunshine. (Not all of them came out too well but that doesn't matter.) Nice to see so many youngsters interested in aviation & having a great time. ;)

Here's a few pics I took today - Easter Monday.

Pretty thorough pre-flight.

All ready to go. I suspect that this young chap has done all this before.

Meanwhile - returning from her first flight. A 15th birthday present from her parents. Something tells me she enjoyed it. I told them they had better start saving up. ;)

That was a good trip. Image

Now, what about a spot of lunch old chap. :)

I just realized - there were airplanes in the photos!  Hagar's descriptions had me concentrating on the people and the "story" behind the photos.

Nice photo-story, H!

Keeping that digital camera in fine form there Doug....nice shooting....I understand your ability to stay local, and see some neat flying stuff....... ;) ;D

...I suspect that little ARV1 SUPER 2 is a homebuilt as I'm not at all familiar with it.....

After a bit of a look, I find its an UltraLight from a company based at Sandown on the Isle of Wight..........the first A/C was built in 1985 and was registered as G-STWO . 8)

Glad you like my photos Craig. I have some more but can't promise they will be as interesting as these.

Nice photo-story, H!

Thanks Felix. I appreciate your comments. ;)

Thanks Doug. Ken is correct. It's a modified ARV1 Super 2 with a Rotax engine. ARV Aircraft Ltd was based at Sandown Airport on the Isle of Wight from 1983-1987 & produced about 30 of the type. Several examples were operated by a flying club at Shoreham at the time. The ARV1 was originally powered by a Wankel type "rotary" engine. This was plagued with bearing lubrication problems that were never properly resolved to my knowledge. The more conventional Rotax is apparently much more reliable. The company was formed by local entrepreneur & businessman Richard Noble, the same man responsible for the recent successful attempt on the world land speed record with the Thrust 2 jet powered car.
