I work at the Boeing factory where the Apache is built.  The only reason they demonstrate aerobatics is to impress possible buyers (marketing).  I have also worked with U.S. Army Apache pilots and maintenance crews.  They are forbidden from doing any of those maneuvers.  The Cheif test pilot at Boeing is the guy that flies the aerobatics.  He once likened it to Buzz Lightyear's flying ability which is more like falling gracefully.

there are only a few people in the army allowed to do this here too. Those being the blue eagles lynx pilots.  The thing to note with the squad, is they are all either instructors, or have been instructors at some point, and have been flying formany years. This is the armys best of the best basically:) although the lynx pilot has it sort of easy. Its the Gazelle pilots who have to do the tricky stuff.

because its getting very old. But like i said before, the plan is to replace it with a new updated lynx(assuming they havent cancelled the project) there are a few things it needs to improve on.
1: Weapons and systems, it can only carry 8 TOW anti tank missiles, with the option for a machine gun.
Not even half that of the Apache.
2:Space for soldiers, i believe it is equipped to carry 10. this is meant to be a frontline helicopter, 10 soldiers isnt exactly many.
3: It needs to be able to fit on all the ships the current lynx can land on.

and in my opinion it needs to be able to use its speed alot better. This helicopter holds the speed record, and apart from the one which holds that record(now resting in weston super-mare) none of them are fitted to fly that fast, a few simple modifications would allow it.

This is a very good point that I've not seen discussed. It always seemed obvious to me that helicopters are particularly vulnerable to ground fire. It would take very little damage to bring one down with disastrous results. This appears to be borne out by recent events. So how effective are they in modern warfare?
