Who Can Name this Plane?

Its probably something really common but can somebody Identifiy this plane?



It seems to be parked at Bristol-Lulsgate alot, never seen anything like it before. I would describe it as a 'flying brick'!

Hazarding a guess I'd say a Shorts 330-200 or Shorts Sherpa (freight version of the 330-200) but the picture is kind of tiny.....

you are correct ozzy, its a shorts. Its privatly owned and based out of bristol, i am not sure who owns it, but i believe it runs trips to the small islands in the bristol channel.

by the way that grey building in the back is bristol flying club where i have taken my lessons. behind that is a white building thats the control tower

Thanks, I just thought it was quite a strange looking beast! This is just one of the planes I saw which I had absolutely no Idea. (I have a feeling there were rather too many planes taking off which I labelled a 'Baron'!!)

I have got quite a few pictures of bristol so I can now start again with the scenery. I just need to get some advice first on the best combinations of design programs as I hope to make it more realistic this time. As this plane seems to be based there perhaps I should include one as a fixed object? Not sure is this is possible though.  

Unfortunately following a computer crash and losing a hard drive I lost all the Aerial photos and plans of the airport I had got from the Internet. The aerial photo wasn't much use as it was taken before the new terminal was in use. I did though have an extremely useful black and white plan of the airfield showing the layout

Hi Bird man. Good luck with your scenery. I can't help with anything right now but if I find anything suitable I'll let you know.

As an aside - this reminded of a strange looking aircraft that landed at Shoreham back in the 1950s, when I was but a lad.

It turned out to be the Hurel-Dubois HD.34. Miles Aircraft were based at Shoreham at that time & George Miles was interested in the possibilties of the high aspect ratio wing on a cargo aircraft. The Miles Hurel-Dubois HDM-105 was a Miles Aerovan modified with the same high aspect ratio wing.


I believe they only built one prototype which I often saw flying around until it was destroyed in a landing accident. Miles were subcontractors for Shorts & I always assumed they took over the project. The "flying brick" in your photo is the result. It's actually very efficient & performs rather better than your average brick.

PS. Rifleman old chap, that link of yours is not quite the longest one I've seen on this forum but it runs a close 2nd.

I had a little look at Avsim for this plane yesterday and several came up. A paint scheme of one of the planes I saw looked pretty similar - although it was Aurigny air services. I seem to remember when I was at bristol an Aurigny Air services take off and it could even have been pne of these. So with any luck I will be able to include one in my scenery. Unfortunately Ive had to stop as my computer broke but I shall start agin in January when my new one arrives  ;D

Is that an aurigny air services plane CraigL? If not I could probably wipe out the logo with Paint shop pro or something.

I noticed that was the flying school building there CraigL so I will certainly include it. Are there any others in the following pictures which are extremely important. I will be putting most of them in anyway.

Sorry its taken so long, as for the plane, i dont know if it does belong to augney i will do a search for ya in a minute.
buildings that could be important, Well in the first picture, theres the white building behind the Twin prop, thats one of the maintenence hangers i believe, i might be wrong though. the brownish grey building beside it, i believe contains the helicoptors for the helo flying club based there
The little white cabin next to the next to the flying club, is the place they do the preflight briefing, ground lessons and so on. bloody cold in there in the winter.
and then generally any of the bigger buildings.
problem is i havent been up there in a while so knowing who owns what is a memory game, and ownership seems to switch often.

I can't wait to be able to take one of these 'Bricks' up into the FS air There seem to be tons of models available. Even an AI version which is even better....

I was certain that I saw 'Aurigny air services' take off - and they come to bristol according to that site so that fits perfectly. The emerald express paint looks pretty similar so perhaps it may be a good first repaint attempt!

It was the far side of the airport along the perimiter road. When aproaching the airport, next to the pub there is a road that leads adjacent to the Airport. About a mile and a half along there is alittle road that leads up towards the airport (I think there is a sign with helecopter flying lessons or something to mark it) at the top of the hill it just follows the perimiter fence around the end of the runway. at the far side it rises giving quite a nice view of the airport as you can see.

Looks like an HS/BAe 748 to me. According to their site Emerald Airways operates the world's largest fleet of this type. I can easily check this claim by visiting my old company. They also have 2 of those "flying bricks".

you may have even seen the BAC shorts there aswell:)
there are a number of companys who fly them into bristol.
it was pretty cool to walk out to the plane and see all these old planes parked just down the ramp from me. shame i didnt have a decent camera back then, think i might take another lesson after christmas and with the camera i should be able to get some decent shots of what they have there up close.

Sorry about the link! This is an new picture since I last visited airliners. It gives me alot beter idea of the tower and the bristol flying centre for my scenery too (i'll get on to that ). I think it must be a different plane though.
