More old display photos

Postby Hagar » Sat Jan 10, 2004 8:58 am

OK you asked for it. Please remember these are old photos taken on a conventional "point & shoot" camera. All taken at various displays at Shoreham. My ancient scanner has also seen better days. ::)

The world's smallest aircraft carrier. :o
Martyn Carrington showing off in his Piper Cub. He takes off from & lands on the moving trailer. Now in his 20s Martyn has been flying since he was 9 years old. He went solo on his 17th birthday & got his PPL 3 days later. He's been doing this sort of thing ever since.
Image

The Hawker Hunter. My favourite jet so I had to include it although this is not a good shot.
Image

Replica Fokker Dr.1 triplane with a modern engine behind the dummy rotary. There was also a black example at one time but it unfortunately crashed killing the owner pilot. :'(
Image

This is the original Tripe - the inspiration for the Fokker. A full sized Sopwith Triplane. I had a chat with the owner who built it himself from original plans. It's very manoeuvrable but a tad tricky to fly. This one was taken last year with my new digital camera.
Image

Tiger Moth "Spirit of Pashley". The legendary Cecil Pashley was my boss & flying instructor in the early 1960s. It was a privilege to know him - being taught to fly by him was a bonus. ;)
It must have been a tad windy, hence the man on the wing. This brings back memories of doing it myself across the full length of the airfield. The Tiger is tricky to handle on the ground above 18 - 20 knots wind speed.
Image

An immaculate Miles Magister or "Maggie" in early RAF markings. There used to be plenty of these famous WWII ab-initio trainers on the civil register. Sadly they are very rare nowadays.

Great shots!!!
I'm hoping that these morons over here in the states lose some of thier fears and we can have some airshows over here!! The only ones close by have been cancelled the last few years because of security fears!!!
And that in itself is proof that the "terrorists" have acomplished thier main objective!!! "Instill fear in the minds of people"!!!

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I'm a little reluctant to post these due to the poor quality. ::)

I didn't go much on the idea to start with. I prefer authentic makings but this one is tastefully done. It's very striking & effective & the bright colours make it stand out during the diplay. These gaudy markings are usually part of a sponsorship deal & the price we pay for seeing these rare old birds flying.

Thanks Fret. I think you're right there. Air displays are one of the most popular & well-attended events in this country. If they tried banning them here I suspect there would be a riot. :o

Now I have a reasonable digital camera I'm hoping to visit as many displays as possible this year. :)

I intend doing so. ;) There's usually something going on here every weekend during the display season. Sometimes more than one.  As it's a small country I can travel almost anywhere so I'm hoping the weather will be as good as last year. I really missed a golden opportunity there. Not sure it will happen again ::)

It was always my ambition to visit Oshkosh one day. Never got round to it. Not sure that's likely to happen now. Ah well. You can't win 'em all.

Love Miss Demeanor, I think that someone let their imagination go wild there...

Re the DR1, I believe it was the Red one that crashed in the mid/late 90's killing Robin Bowes, the owner. I was under the impression the Black one was still around...

I must admit she does look rather nice. Much better from the top view as I remember. Lots of little stars. ;)

Ooops. You might be right at that. :-[
