At 30.000ft over Italy...

Postby jankees » Sun Apr 19, 2009 1:35 am

..you can actually see across the country, as I discovered during a recent flight from Ancona to Bastia. I wanted to see how high the P-47 would go, so I donned my oxygen mask, opened up the turbo supercharger and off I went. In the end, I levelled off at 35.000 ft.

still climbing, with Lago di Trasimeno in the background

at altitude, near Gubbio. You can see the Adriatic on the left, and the Tyrrhenian sea on the right. Italy isn't that wide!

Flying over Tuscany, with Elba and Corsica in the background

Clouds over Tuscany, but clear skies over the Italian Riviera, the Po plain and the Alps that are visible in the background

I start my descent over Elba, slowly, to avoid shock cooling off the cylinder heads.

There's Bastia

Over the rugged interior or Corsica

Final circuit at Bastia, with Elba on the right

on final, flaps down, gear down, canopy open, 30" manifold pressure and 2550 rpm on a high angle descent

almost there, can't see the runway anymore...

..but we live to fly another day!

I hope you like these shots, you will have recognized the A2A P-47, Italy scenery is freeware from Mazzokan, Corsica is payware from France VFR

That's impressive, 35G in a WWII bird!  Your shots are great as well, keep it up!  Once I buy the bird I will be loading up your paints
