Pacific Coast Tour #17: Kodiak Sightseeing - pt. 4

Postby Harold » Sun Jul 29, 2007 3:59 pm

continued from part 16

The last few shots in my Sightseeing Kodiak series starts with the Alaskan Bush Charters (ABC) Kodiak Office (KOFF),
which is located over the hills behind the Coast Guard base and just a few minutes away from Port Lions.

The airstrip is mostly used to carry folks to their intended bush destinations.

Alaskan Bush Charters was started by Bush Scenery designer Don Moser. Don has been an active member of the bush flying community
for a long time and he has contributed much to the bush flying community, with custom sceneries and custom aircraft repaints.
He's even done some repaints for Bush Flying Unlimited in addition to his own Alaskan Bush Charters.

Don's name runs right along side other Flight Simulator bush flying pioneers like Ken Nelson and Ron Ackerley (all starting back
with FS98 and even before that). Don truly is one of the good guys and please do check out his website for further information.

About fifteen miles to the east lies Kodiak Airport (PADQ), which is also home to the famous US Coast Guard Base.

The scenery is made up from a package by Don Moser, which was developed for Flight Simulator 2002 and although it has some glitches,
when installed into Flight Simulator 2004, it mixes quite nicely with the package made by Brian Smith. Brian is also the author of the
US Coast Guard LORAN Station on Attu Island, that you may remember from the first leg of my tour.

The US Coast Guard station was featured in the 2006 film 'The Guardian' with Aston Kutcher and Keving Kostner.

Six miles north-east of Kodiak Airport you'll find the City of Kodiak. Kodiak was founded on September 22, 1784 when some Russians esta-
blished a colony here. The Baranov House, named for the Russian commander, was built around 1808 and is the oldest Russian structure in
North America. It was used as a store and commissary for the fur-trading outpost. Today Kodiak has over 6000 residents and is the second
most lucrative fisheries port in the state (behind Dutch Harbor) and fourth most lucrative in the nation both in volume and value of seafood.

The shot below shows Kodiak Municipal Airport (KDK) and the Lilly Lake Floatplane Base (9Z3). Although originally made for
Flight Simulator 2000 this is a very nice and detailed package made by Tom Fica and also features an Alaskan Winds Air Service hub.
You can get the package here here. On the left you can also see the Munch Brothers Aviation Kodiak Base.

Here you can see the Ouzinkie airstrip (4K5). Ouzinkie is a small town (population approx. 200), located on the shores of Marmot Bay on
the south-western part of Spruce Island, approximately 10 miles from Kodiak City. Depending the aircraft type, the trip normally takes
about 10
