Pacific Coast Tour #15: Kodiak Sightseeing - pt. 2

Postby Harold » Fri Jul 27, 2007 10:31 am

continued from part 14

Moving further up the island towards Larsen Bay, a small town with hardly over 100 inhibitants.

Passing over the Karluk Lake Floatplane Base (KKL) on the far end of Karluk Lake. Look, there's a Beaver and even a Republic Seabee!

Image

Here's the airstrip for Larsen Bay (2A3) ... nothing more than a gravel runway and a couple of hangers.

About six miles east of Larsen Bay lies the Amook Bay Seaplane Base (AK81), a floatplane base owned and managed by a guy called
Mike Munsey. The base is subsidized by the Essential Air Service program, a U.S. government program which guarantees that small
communities in the US, which were served by certificated airlines (prior to deregulation), maintained commercial service.

The scenery was developed for Flight Simulator 2002 by Ron Vorak, but unfortunately it is misplaced near Carlson Point,
instead of the Amook Bay. Apart from that it is really quite nice, if you don't mind some glitches ...

But it fits my Ultimate Terrain very well and it's available here. Make sure you also get the necessary texture updates!

Moving south down the lake shores I ended up at McCord's Landing (DMA2), a small 1000 ft. dirt strip without any lake facilities. I didn't need
to land there but I can imagine that the approach from either direction is very tricky, as there are some good size trees that make it a little
tight. Very nice scenery made by Don Moser. You can get the scenery here.

Very nice set Harold. Well done and very informative. I can see that you invested a lot of time in this flight. I'm going to check out that seaplane base at Amook Bay later today. If I get a couple of good screen-shots I might post them. Keep up the good work. We enjoy them.
