These may not be great shots...

Postby FridayChild » Sun Nov 26, 2006 12:56 pm

...but it sure was a great flight. I set off on a route from Padova, Italy to the Losinj island, Croatia, with an intermediate stop at Portoroz, Slovenja (both part of Italy before WWII).
The Venice Laguna was beautiful as usual but the weather outside was beginning to worry me.

To cut a long story short, by the time I changed my course to Portoroz I was deep in the clouds with zero visibility, a fairly annoying crosswind and a noticeable turbulence; Portoroz did not clear me to land because it was currently IFR. Since I was very high on fuel I decided to go straight to Losinj in hope the weather would get better, but no such luck. In the end I had to abandon the idea of reaching Losinj and I set off for an alternate site: Pula (on the tip of the Istrian peninsula). I found my way blindly, following vectors given by the tower, and this shot captures the magic moment when I finally came out of the clouds, spotted the airport lights and I realized I would have made it.

This was one flight when I never took my hands off the yoke. Of course in real life I would never have taken off in such uncertain weather!

Those shots are actually not that bad! The last one is pretty sweet! Might I ask, what plane are you flying? It looks something Carenado to me.....

High Flight Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared

Oh, by the way: to be able to land at Pula, I had to file an IFR plan "on the fly" because the airport was "currently IFR". My original plan was a VFR flight to Losinj. After my IFR plan was accepted, the tower cleared me to land, gave me vectors for a straight-in, and then of course I flew my way manually because this aircraft has no autopilot.
Is all this realistic, or can it happen only in a simulator? I mean, can one switch from VFR to IFR on the fly, and with any type of a/c?
