Yes he thought he had permission but didn't check with ATC. The cockpit voicerecorder indicated that the other crew knew that they had only been given clearance but were too afraid to tell the captain because in their eyes he was a Sky God and he was most certainly to blame for the Heathrow incident!!!!!! He was a very impatient man!!

Actually he thought he had permission.
The ATC was very unclear with the instructions.
Cant blame it all on the captain.
Did the PanAM 747 even vacate on the right taxiway?
