New B-2 Spirit!!

Postby HABU » Sun Nov 20, 2005 1:59 pm

Gorgeous model, great VC and comes with custom MFDs in the cockpit! From the maker of their C5 Galaxy :o

Spirit from Alphasim, the scenery (well some of it!) is Mega SoCal.

Thanks!

What don't you like about the model? As far as I can see it looks how the real deal looks  ??? Plus its got a good VC, and that lovely shine on the cockpit glass.  ;D

Meh...the flight dynamics seems alittle 'skew'...

...I stall at 10 degrees AOA on take off (Now, I'm not an expert on aerodynamics, but I'd guess something with 4 P&Ws and nothing but wings would get atleast 15 degrees if a 747 can)...

...most of the animation is either wrong or not there (rudder is wrong, don't think flaps are even modeled, thrust reverser flaps are somehow tied to the tail hook key)....

...list goes on and on... :(

Seems you don't know much about B-2's -  those doors are not thrust reversers, they are engine suction relief doors. As for stalling - it might have a 747's engines but it sure as hell doesn't have a 747 wing ! There's no comparison, you can equate the performance just on the basis of engine output. I think Alphasim have done a fantastic job all round on this package. People have wanted a good B-2 for years, why hasn't one been done ? It's too damn hard to model that's why. No one had the skill to put one together until now - kudos Alphasim !  ;D

Looking forward to their new F-117A !!

Meh...I have always known them as thrust reverser flaps...

...urm...and the rest of your post is completely illogical... ::)

...flying wing = high lift, low drag, which means short take offs, good climb rates...

I'm not saying its a bad package, but we should expect alot better for $24.00...

The B-2 has no thrust reverser. Thats fact.

According to the book "Black Jets, AirTime" page 46:

"The B-2 is not a fighter: its flying wing design limits it to a relatively small Alpha range, its long wingspan provides a rapid roll rate, and it does not have the thrust for high G maneuvering or rapid acceleration. But it is more responsive than most large aircraft, because the control system is powerful and the airframe is stiff."

Unfortunately the book as far as I can see does not list any take-off speeds.

But it is clear to me that an aircraft as complex as a computer controlled flying wing costing $2 billion dollars would be hauled around the sky without more respect! I also believe the real life B-2 being fly-by-wire cannot be flown like a fighter for the computers would not let it. Obviously Flight sim won't handle fly-by-wire.

You say:

"...flying wing = high lift, low drag, which means short take offs, good climb rates... "

Your comment is illogical without taking into account its weight and power output. It might be aerodynamic, and have a large wingspan, but being a heavy weight it still takes a good length to get airborne.

I'm almost certain you took off/tried to take off with a full load of fuel which puts the takeoff weight at 380,500lbs. Obviously the heavier you are the faster you need to go to take-off.

Anyway, there are NO flaps either, the control surfaces are listed below:

Total control surfaces = 9

Outermost surfaces are speedbrakes/rudders

Flattened pointy middle tail surface is the Gust load aleviator

The remaining six are elevons, for pitch and roll, although the outermost of the six act as ailerons at low speed.

I hope this clears up any doubt that what we have here is the best B-2 for flight sim so far.

Next time do your research first before criticising something. I don't want to have to dig the books out again  ;D

Sounds entirely reasonable, although a long wingspan will happily reduce roll rate (one of the reasons they "clipped" Spitfire's wings...).

The other thing against it is its very angular design of its plan form - not the best shapes as far as aerodynamics are concerned, but obviously they had other factors to consider whilst designing the B2... :)
