EUREKA!!!!! I SAW THE NORTHERN LIGHTS!!

Postby Alphajet_Enthusiast » Sat Jun 25, 2005 5:23 am

I THINK I FOUND IT!!! I DIDNT THINK IT WAS POSSIBLE, BUT IT IS!!!!!

When flying around Novisibirsk in my E3-A Sentry last night, it appeared to me, AN AURORA BOREALIS!!!!!! THIS IS GREAT!!!!

I managed to snap a few shots of it before it disappeared!! Later, when I was tuning the weather radar to check if the Aurora caused any kind of signal on the radar, IT APPEARED AGAIN!!!!

SO first of all, for those of you that dont know, what is an Aurora???

Auroras are  halos of light circles found in the north and south polar regions. They are caused when charged gas  molecules (originating from solar wind) crash into the magnetized poles of the earth producing ten million megawatts of electrical power, and thereby these amazing visual spectacles. The Auroras found in the Northern hemisphere are known as [glb]Aurorae Borealis[/glb]!!

This is a real image of an Aurora!!

All of a sudden, it was gone....  ???

WHen tuning the weather radar, it reappears!! Note this beautiful green glow!!
Image

Just to give you the broader picture!!
Image

Even broader!!!
Image

It gets fainter...
Image

And then it was gone!!! :'(

AMAZING OR WHAT????
Who else has seen this??   :)

I had a nice serie with Aurora Borealis in one screenshot contest... using edited effect so it's way bigger and more colorful

what altitude were you at.  I saw them before, but I had to slew up really high for some reason.

Got to go, just finshed downloading the Beech 18 and slingsby.

This 707 by far beats the 727 from Captain Sim, I assure you.   The virtual cockpits cant even be compared, the 707 being the obvious victor not only in providing a more accurate replication of flight dynamics but also in its physical representation such as the virtual cockpit and the panels. Worth the buck, Jimbo!  :)

If you head to Northern Norway in winter you should see them no problem pretty often. Nice shots  ;)

My only issue with it is how Microsoft done it. It acts like a moving cloud layer about 500 feet or something abve the aircraft. It makes it look too fake for me. Considering I live in Alaska, and see the lights all the time in the winter, I should know.....

Its true.... I have a book called "Extreme Earth" by National Geographic society and it says Aurorae occur between 10-100km above earth... yet I was almost parallel with one at 25,000 feet...   ;D If im not mistaken 10km = 33,000ft....

FS 2002 sucks then. I saw it before down by the Wisconsin Illinois border. I think my game is seriously demented.

I don't think those are supposed to be Northern lights... sorry to burst your bubble an stuff... I think that's some sorta cloud layer than is built in FS9 that you don't normally see like that, it only seems to look like that during dusk or night. I was flying a A319 at FL250 over Finland and saw the same thing. When I went up to FL300 it looked closer. It must be at like FL350 or above. If it was Northern lights it should have stopped after a while, I saw them all the way down to Germany right above me.

EDIT: Besides, they are always green, if MS had put Northern Lights, I think that they would have added a few colors.

Anywho, whatever they are, they still make for nice screenshots  ;D

I was flying in the Ketchikan Peninsula.  Default scenery as I don't have Misty Fjords...(yet ;D )

At any rate, I saw it often while flying at night.

There's as similar phenomenon that occurs in the South Polar region as well...I've heard it's even more colorful than the Northern Lights!

Allright nice this was the first time I've seen them, I hope that I may witness more of them. Flying up north is not really my thing, you know, the prospect of icing conditions!  ;D
