Into the mouth of Hell

Postby SaVas » Fri Aug 13, 2004 7:23 pm

Where Dave decided to fly in the calm before the storm, our job is to fly into the storm and collect as much data as we can, so that maybe we will have the opportunity to save lives.

From Miami we took off the Cessna Citation X NOAA, and within twenty minutes we were already experiencing gusting winds the Citation well on its way into the mouth of Hell.

Image

The clouds began to thicken, with sustained wind gusts of 70 mph. We knew what we were in for, and we are good at what we do!

Image

Within seconds of entering the beginning of the hurricane the torrential rains were evident and this was just the beginning

Image

Lightning flashed all around us as we went deeper into the storm collecting more and more data that was sent back to base.

Image

Atlast the calm of the hurricane's eye. Surreal, knowing what was surrounding us, and what the people below that did not heed the evacuation warnings were suffering through

More to come....

Enjoy

Running low on fuel we had no choice but to land at the nearest airport, Daytona Beach Intl. As you can see the cross winds were very heavy, but we knew we could do it...

Image

Just as we were about to touch down, a news channel cameraman took this shot. Wind speed had increased, and the landing was questionable, yet I and 4 souls on board feared not.

Image

Touchdown...now to stop this bird!

Image

The landing strip was drenched, a pool of water behind us as the rear gear touched down

Image

And yet, the fearless pilots and crew of the NOAA Citation X, made it home safely yet again.

The end
