Im using an LCD monitor and it looks fine ;)

So tell me you can't see the black squares in Don's original shots. That's what a1 is talking about.

I cant see any black squares...it all blends fine...

No hole crawling! Get back out here, Doug!  ;D

That is pretty diagnostic that it's just a gamma adjustment which is needed. I can provide a link to a page with gamma info AND a freeware scale which can be saved as an image and be used to calibrate. There are also programs available which will do it for you but I think that they cost.  ;)

Post the link by all means. As my hobby is working with images I realise the importance of correct calibration. I would actually prefer mine to be a tad darker but my monitor is self-calibrating & readjusts every time it starts up. I've always said that what others can see is not necessarily the same as me. I wonder if others realise that.

I've noticed that if I get a new monitor or change vid cards that I have to recalibrate or things are WAAAY off! Sometimes even updating a driver can do it IF you lose your calibrated settings in the process.

It's tough tweaking it by hand. Takes time and patience but it can be done and gotten pretty darn close. Also, the proper gamma used to be different for Mac and PC. Don't know if it's still that way. Most high end print stuff is processed on Macs so they have their own industry standards for gamma.

Your vid card doesn't allow you to adjust gamma? You have any way to adjust it yourself instead of having the puter do it?  :o

Am I permitted to post a link to the page here in the forum? Not sure about the rules on that one!

WOW! This is interesting! I had no idea that the gamma on people's monitors varied THAT much! Makes you wonder how people are seeing your images, hee, hee!  ;D

You should still worry, Doug! He might just have the same disease you do!  ;D

This page is pretty good:

Even if you don't actually use any of it, it's still quite interesting.  ;)

You funny, SB!  ;D

Pretty interesting, Doug. The utility referred to on the page you linked to uses exactly the same scale as the page I linked to!  ;D

So how is your monitor looking in terms of the gamma scale?

Yeah, I hate that off center thing about LCD's. That's part of why I stick with a CRT.  ;)

I've been messing around with the black level. Think I now have it about right. Not a great deal of difference in overall image quality but those black squares in your edit are now less distinct.

Yeah, I hate that off center thing about LCD's. That's part of why I stick with a CRT.

I suspected as much. The problem with this lark is that you have to consider what others can see in your images that you can't. Most people use LCD monitors these days so they can pick out things you won't even notice. I was amazed at the difference in image quality when I got mine. I wouldn't go back to CRT now.
