On this one I experimented with adding grass and water to the pic (the default water and grass was crap)

Now that I look back at it... the one thing I have to focus on next time is keeping that majority of the shot aimed at the plane ;D

GIMP/Paint.net ... I use both because each have features I like using

how do you sellect areas for the blurs in paint.net to effect when i do blurs it just applys it to the whole pic

Take the tool shown and pick out an area to be blurred, then click the certain blur you want

I quite like it, except for the brightness and contrast. It looks a bit hazy now, but perhaps that was your intention?

I see you're getting the hang of gimp now... Maybe you could also try out pixia, it's also free for download. Haven't tried it though, so I can't tell you if it's any good or how it works, but I've heard good things about it. ;)
