First Kill

Postby Sytse » Wed May 30, 2007 10:59 am

In 1942 RAF pilots encountered a new type of German fighter, the Focke-Wulf FW-190. At the time, this new fighter was far superior to any British plane. This is why the Spitfire mk.IX was developed. However, the firs plane to bring down a FW-190 was a Spitfire mk.V. The pilot must have been very skilled to beat a much more advanced enemy. Read more here about Focke-Wulfs and Spitfires.

I hope you enjoy my work.

Well, at that time Fw190 pilots hadn't as much experience with the aircraft as they had later on (remember, it was brand new).

Plus, the 190 is an absolute beech in turns and stall characteristics (one reason why I prefer the 109).

Nonetheless a nice edit, even though, the Spit's prop looks a bit strange.

Yes but... Hitler's Luftwaffe lost the Battle of Britain, even though they had over a four to one superiority in both planes and pilots, AND they lost WWII as a whole.  The Brits won the BoB predominantly with Hurris, not Spits, so 109's did the Luftwaffe little good even against the humble Hurricane! The point being that no matter what the Luftwaffe had, they always ended up getting their butts kicked by the Brits and Yanks, right from the BoB to the end of the war. That's history, folks!  ;)

I want to see you win a full-scale war on two (later on three) fronts. ;P

Hee, hee! I'm just yanking your chain a little, Bjorn!  8-)

Threre was never a problem with Luftwaffe aricraft or with their experienced pilots. The problem was that Hitler wasn't a military strategist and that he refused to heed the advice of those under his command who were good military strategists! They most certainly did advise him against a war on multiple fronts but he wouldn't listen! After all, his own Generals tried to kill him!

In addition, the Luftwaffe was conceived as a defensive force rather than as an offensive one. It wasn't designed to cross the Channel and attack Great Britain. IMHO, it is that which ultimately doomed the invasion of Great Britain to failure. The Brits were sharp enough to perceive that inherent weakness and to very cleverly exploit it, although success depended upon Hitler and Goering continuing to make blunders. Had the Luftwaffe not been ordered to attack by day and had their fighters not been ordered by Goering to stay close to the bombers, things might have turned out differently! In the end, aggressors always end up defeating themselves, despite the best efforts of those under their command!  ;)

Thats the point...we're sensible enough not to start wars on 3 fronts :D
