J-3 Cub

Well since starting my Spitfire/MJ100 project my father-in-law has been pondering and started to look at knocking himself up a little bush flier... So we've been chatting and he likes the Wag Aero-Sport which is a replica of a J-3 Cub. I know a little of the history of the cub, but I was wondering about performance, range, luggage capabilities etc, and what modifications are possible to it, popular conversions (extra bag tanks?), and what sort of gear he would need on-board for daytime VFR only.
I know Hagar will have a million and one useful bits of information on this one for me....

There have been many versions & modifications to the original design over the years. The rear fuselage is a handy place for stowage providing you keep it well away from the control cables. My old mate Chris Foss transports his R/C models to events all over the country in this way. Some of his high performance thermal soarers wouldn't fit in my car. I believe there was even a "medivac" version of the J-3 with provision for a stretcher behind the cockpit.

I'll need to consult my reference books to find more specific information.

That is the very page I first found on this...
Father-in-law likes the idea we can whack skis on it and use it in the winter as well...... Thank goodness there are no decent sized lakes around here or I could see myself making floats really soon ::) :P :-[ :-X
Basically what he is saying is at least 2 bodies, some luggage (read a picnic hamper the size of a Mini chock full of good grub), and a pleasant way to enjoy the view.

Fantastic to read that you have got a "sensible" Father-in-Law.... ;D...!
I like the idea of pick-nicking planes.... :P...!
..and a J3 Cub look-alike is perfect for the job, none of this rushing around in Spitfire stuff... ;)...!
You are not going to land your Mk XIV Spit in the farmers field, beside the river for a bit of camping* and fishing... ;D...!
...but Father-in-Law is...LOL...!

LOL That might be asking a bit much of a poor li'l ol' Cub. :o

It strikes me that an An-2 would be a more suitable choice. You could get the whole family & the pets + the kitchen sink in one of them things. ;D

Ozzy and father plan on using the same construction techniques and process as used in Robert Heinlein's "Number of the Beast", once they made a transdimensional jump to the Land of Oz.

Although I agree on the An-2 as a better choice of a runabout.

Felix, if they do it that way the plane would included a rec room, two bedrooms, a full kitchen with walk-in freezer, an indoor swimming pool and a hot tub. :)

You could get all that & more in an An-2 - probably room for a small swimming pool. Live in it if you wish. You & your daft mates could also use it for leaping out of. :o

The more I think about it this seems the only suitable choice. Now all you have to do is to persuade Pa-in-law. ;)

I don't think father-in-law wants an An-2 for the simple reason he doesn't want to be a taxi service to 12,000 ft regularly for a bunch of the great unwashed ;D ;D ;D

specs and info
Fully aerobatic 4-seater, avialble with 360hp engine and inverted oil system as an option. can be fitted with more powerful carburetted engines to some 420hp. fuel injected semi-expeimental 450hp on special request.

The Yak looks better, but the Technoavia is a little faster because of the modified windscreen.

Will I seriously doubt there is a piece of paper sufficient to support father-in-laws weight ;) ;D
Mother-in-law is alas a fabulous cook who believes in mammoth sized portions, and being the gentleman he is he doesn't wish to give offence ;D ;D ;D
I have the same problem. When I first moved here I could count all my ribs in the mirror.... err not anymore ;D
