Goodbye 757...

Just saw on the news Beoing is going to retire the 757.  25 years of flying and its goodbye.

The DC-3 began flying around 1933. I saw one fly over my house yesterday evening. Most likely a cargo hauler on it's way back to Opa Locka. How many 1933 cargo trucks can you think of, that would still be able to operate in an actual, cost affective, scenario. If the DC-3 is still doing business 70 years after inception, I think you and I both will be eating soft food and wearing diapers, when the "seven five" will just be getting started! Although, the one dividing factor......DC-3 vs 757, is pressurization. The modern jet takes a lot more airframe abuse, due to all of the expansion and retraction.

the 757 is going because no-one wants it anymore. with the 737NG and 900, both being cheaper yet more up to date they are a better choice, can do the same range, and also this could be a gamble on one thing,
7E7, they are now making two varients, long haul and a short haul (to replace the 757) they are hoping i guess that companies  will pick up the 737-900 till the 7e7 is availiable then do the switch
tis a shame though i love watching the 757 coming into land at bristol, it has to go so slow it looks like it will drop out of the sky:)

i know they arnt intended to be. but with the 757 going, the down turn in business and cost savings needed, those who use the 757 on trans-continental routes, like for instance northwest or united or whoever else does, that doesnt need ETOPS, its a good replacement, that or they choose the A321 but thats not good news for boeing.  in the end boeing have really put themselves into a bad place with this. the 767 is to big, and the 737 doesnt have enough in the way of flexibility. also remember the 737 has no life rafts. so even though you dont need ETOPs to cross water it couldnt because of that. need to be specially modified.
i hope this will speed up design and development of the 7E7, which if they put alot of time into it could be ready by 2007 which is 2 to 3 years earlier than predicted..
ah well 757 will still be around for a while yet, and with pleanty in storage there is still chances to buy one

i'm guessing then they have been fitted with the life rafts, i have heard though that the base line 737 doesnt have them fitted as standard, i might be wrong or what i read may have been wrong. hell i have been across water in one with KLM from amsterdam to heathrow before:).
then again i dont worry so much about the 737 it isnt my fav plane and doesnt really have anything that sets it apart form the crowd really

The inventor of the extreme noise abatement procedures is going away... let's hope the 737NG can do the same climbout rates or they will get a lot of nice noise lawsuits

the 757 is my favourite aircraft....... what are they doing.. i personaly do not like the 737 -- too common i suppose and the 777 is erm too big and fat. i love the 767 and the 747 the 727 fantastic aircraft. i am very picky when it comes to aircraft me lol

So?  They've bought a tried and true design, not a first edtion with all the bugs ... give 'em another 40years and they'll be among the "newest" 757s flying!!
