Some more fascinating Photographs, which have recently turned up, of the disastrous 1906 Earthquake and subsequent fire, which destroyed most of the City of San Francisco in California...>>>

A daily worry, even now, for residents in the San Francisco and surrounding area, due to the San Andreas Fault!

A daily worry, like in 1989?

1989 Loma Prieta earthquake

The Loma Prieta earthquake, also known as the Quake of '89 and the World Series Quake, was a major earthquake that struck the San Francisco Bay Area of California on October 17, 1989 at 5:04 p.m. local time. Caused by a slip along the San Andreas Fault, the earthquake lasted approximately 15 seconds and measured 6.9 on the moment magnitude scale (surface-wave magnitude 7.1).[3] The quake killed 63[1] people throughout northern California, injured 3,757 people and left some 8,000[4] to 12,000 people homeless.[5]

The earthquake occurred during the warm-up for the third game of the 1989 World Series, coincidentally featuring both of the Bay Area's Major League Baseball teams, the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants. This was the first major earthquake in America to be broadcast on live television.

I well remember the Interstate 880/Cypress Viaduct collapse.

At the time it was broadcast live on our English Television, an awful sight!

That was nerve-racking for me... I had kinfolk in the Bay Area who might have easily been on the viaduct or the Bay Bridge (but luckily were not!).

Obviously it was much worse in '06...everything made out of wood, and gas lines and coal bins everywhere!! The quake itself was bad, but the fires are what left the city looking like it had been bombed for days...  :o
