Happy Wright Brothers Day!

Postby beaky » Wed Dec 17, 2008 10:48 am

105 years ago today. I didn't know until this year that the US Congress passed a resolution in 1963 that every year the President is to issue a proclamation that Americans should  "observe that day with appropriate ceremonies and activities." ;D

Here's a Kitty Hawk trivia question: what species was the only non-human witness to that first successful flight (other than seagulls), and what was his name?

We've come a long way in 105 years.

No idea on the trivia question.

The dog was an educated guess (the other maybe being a horse). The name wasn't! ;D

Found it via google, but won't reveal incase someone know the answer.

It would be a tough guess- not your typical dog name (but a good one).;D

I recently heard about all this in a very interesting article (Smithsonian Air&Space) about the surviving relatives of the people who were in attendance (including a grandchild of the guy who owned the dog).
the article includes a photo that clearly shows the dog.

These surviving descendants all go there every year to lay a wreath at the site... a nice tradition.

It's sad how many people don't know that Dec 17 is the anniversery of the Wright brother's famous flight. Several people at work had no idea.... ::)

BTW, the dog's name was Bounce. ;D The first in a long line of dogs, who accompanied by at least one boy, often appear whenever a noisy machine with fabric wings is taking off or landing. ;D

Ahhh, I'd assumed it was Orville Wright's dog, Scipio.
