1961 - Bob Dylan makes his singing debut in New York City.

1713 - With the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht, ending the War of the Spanish Succession, France ceded Newfoundland and Gibraltar to Britain.

1814 - Napoleon Bonaparte gets a forced vacation on the island of Elba.

1900 - John P. Holland's 53-foot craft becomes he U.S. Navy's first submarine.
