regarding mankind.. I would say it really started with the
Epic of Gilgamesh !

i had a couple run-ins with my history teacher because i couldn't understand that ancient empires became "known to man" when some european laid eyes on them.

Earliest recorded history was probably a human handprint in pigment or soot (or blood) on stone. Someone was trying to tell a story.

Personally for me, History started in Genesis, chapter one, verse one, "In the beginning, G0d created the heavens and the earth.."
