Most of its been covered, and as has been said, the population of the Island is almost to a man (and woman) British, and have always expressed a wish to stay that way.

From what I've studied in the past the Argentines never really had an interest in the Malvina's until the last century (by which time I think both the French and the UK had held sovereignty). I think the turning point may have been the possible chance of oil around the South Atlantic. I think they blew any chance of ever negotiaiting any change in sovereignty in 1982, and again, what is the attraction, considering the residents are British, and the Island is heavily mined (1982) and quite desolate.

The point of the massive undertaking of the Vulcan raids was not to create damage (initially - although the later raids were aimed at SAM sites), but to let the military Junta in Buenos Aires know that the Task Force was not alone Down South, and that the RAF could and would mount strategic and tactical operations from ultra long range if the situation dictated. Maybe more importantly, it showed that Buenos Aires itself was in striking distance from Acsension, and force the Argentine Air Force to move a proportion of its fighter force further north to protect the capital, giving the Harriers of the RAF and the FAA Sea Harriers less of a headache over the Islands...

The only thing the Thatcher Governmet ever got right ;)
Tempest gets political :o ;) ;D

The Falklands Conflict was a wake up call to remind the world that we did'nt build an empire by being a group of pushovers!

The things I hate about the UK.

The Labour government, membership of the EU, political correctness, stealth taxes, the war on the motorist and a totally ineffective Police Force.

Scania gets Political !

See? I now hate you as we have opposing political views!  >:(

There is a very good reason why Politics is banned here, it starts fights.

P.S., I don't hate you, but I'm sure you get my point.  ;)

BTW, Like her or not, Margaret Thatcher did one hell of alot for the UK, not for nothing does Tony Blair himself admire her.

Scania goes un-Political & promises to stay thus.

Excellent Post btw & some amazing links.  8) :-X

Yes, she put most of my family and freinds out of work and onto the scrap heap for many years, destroyed my community and left many folk I know without any hope for the future. Nice one Maggie.

I have a picture of HMS Glamorgan taken in Hamilton Harbour Bermuda shortly after it returned to service after it was battle damaged by an Exocet on the stbd side...you can still see some damage to the hull plates.

I also had the distinct honour of doing an impromptu "combat turnaround" on some Harrier GR3's that had been enroute to CFB Cold Lake for a Maple Flag exercise. They transited through CFB North Bay while I was in aircraft servicing there.

I have a couple of pics I could scan if anyone is interested...it will have to wait for my next days-off to find...but they are available.

got some pics from there when my dad was serving aboard Argus and the island. I have posted them before but would be happy to again if wanted. Various post war shots of torn up pucaras, and the island from the air.

I do find it ironic how a bunch of people who were not even old enough to understand what was going on at the time of the thatcher era, are all arguing about the job she did. Read about it all you want in history books, and hear from people directly around all you want but there are two sides to her time in office. a large proportion of those are horror stories. Thankfully we wernt
