Unity Day - 1990

Postby Felix/FFDS » Sun Oct 03, 2004 7:56 pm

October 3

1990 East and West Germany reunite after 45 years

Less than one year after the destruction of the Berlin Wall, East and West Germany come together on what is known as "Unity Day." Since 1945, when Soviet forces occupied eastern Germany, and the United States and other Allied forces occupied the western half of the nation at the close of World War II, divided Germany had come to serve as one of the most enduring symbols of the Cold War.

There were some celebrations yesterday, but I've completely ignored 'em.
Well, I've also ignored the fact that it was reunion day.

Dateline: Nov 11th, 1989...approx 2355 local.

A very drunk Silver Fox falls off the Wall...the wrong way. Typical for our illustrious hero he lands face down in front of a East German Border Guard. Our hero is easily identified as a member of NATO forces by his Sqdn T-shirt and jacket...

OH MY GOD!

He's just invaded the Warsaw Pact single handedly!

Seriously, a very confused Border Guard thinks about it and then gives me a boost back up on the Wall. Returning the favour I offer him a hand up...he takes a quick look around and ditches his weapon and jacket and climbs up to much cheering.

Last I saw of him he was staggering off into the distance with a very attractive redhead in tow.

Defection has it's priviledges. :)

Ignored. There's nothing left to be proud of in this country, except the fact that our head of state ain't a nutter.

That must have been a fascinating experience to have been there.

Sure. Especially when you were about three years old at that time. I can't remember much of it but it surely was great! ;D
