Mt. St. Helens

Postby tsunami_KNUW » Tue May 18, 2004 9:18 pm

Well if you don't know today is the 24th anniversary of the eruption of Mt. St. Helens . Living in Washington State I have never seen it even though I have always wanted too. Though I might get my chance this summer

I'd say it belongs in General D, or History.
But putting that aside, I too have always wanted to visit the mountain.

Wow! I can remember that like it was yesterday! Hard to believe it was 24 years ago!
I lived in Michigan at the time and can remember the ash was in the air there!! Covering the cars like the spring time pollen. Weeks with "greyish brown" skies.
Although nothing like the areas closer to the beast!
Definately a awesome display of the power of nature!

That's funny. I remembered posting a reply to this topic & thought I'd finally gone round the bend. Then I found it duplicated in the History forum. ::) I'm sure it's done deliberately to confuse old fogies like me. :o

Here's what I said if anyone is interested. ::)

[i]Was it really that long ago? I know time flies but I can hardly believe it. :o

I've moved it ;D
I can remember this vividly. I also remember there was some old guy who'd lived there for years and told all the geologists etc to get knotted as they didn't know what the hell they were talking about. He got made into toast ::) Definate Darwin ::) ::) ::)

I am indeed a guy, or at least the last time I went to the loo I was.
And I like to think I'm wise, along with a vain megalomaniac ;D

I had just moved to Seattle from the east coast, pulling a trailer along the Columbia river then up I-5, when she blew. I mailed everyone I knew a small sample of ash. This many years later many of my friends still have the samples, but I lost all of mine.

An interesting note, one week after the eruption I drove a company truck to Spokan,  literally trashed the engine. Saw the Washington state road crews using snow plows to clear the roads.

Clear skies,
Paul
