At last. These have been sitting around at various NW europe airfields for too long. The last Tempest II to be restored ended up stateside with Kermit Weeks, but unairworthy.

AFAIK his V is still at Booker Doug with PPS.

Shame it's not a Tempest V.

How is it a shame? The V's had a different Engine that I've heard are difficult to restore.

I've seen a Napier Sabre in a Museum & it sure looked complicated.

It's a shame because the Tempest II is reasonably similar to the reasonable plentiful Sea Fury. I'd be excited by an airworthy Tempest II and it Centaurus, but due to the rarity of Hawker Typhoons (1!) and Tempests Vs I'd love to hear the (somewhat utterly mental) sound of an airworthy Napier Sabre!

Old recording, but have listen. Somewhere between a Merlin and a Pulse jet. A bit like the aeroplane equivalent of BRM's V16 F1 car of the 50s!

I see what you mean.

I'd love to see a Typhoon flying or even in a Museum. They seem to have been forgotten about even though they did so much for the Allied War Effort.

Thanks for explaining that C. I've been lucky enough to experience many things in aviation that most people can only dream of but I would dearly love to hear the fantastic (utterly mental) sound of a Napier Sabre in the air before I depart this mortal coil.

The sound is so animal! Kind of like the engine timing didn't have spark advance and wants to run best at high rpm. I know spark advance was on the steering columns of model A Fords because I had one. Did aircraft have something like timing advance?
