Curiously, I have just looked on Google Earth and can see no sign at all of the supposed "volcanic ash cloud".

Last photo taken there was 2002-2008. More recent photos are 2008/2009 in most places. Seems unlikely to have volcano ash from eruptions that hadn't happened yet.

I would've thought that live imagery is only available for those with access to Keyhole or Kosmos satellites.

...and look at the sky: not a single contrail and no 'noise' -just plain sunshine and the sound of birds...  8-)

Edit: while writing this on my terrace, chilling, a pesky chopper overflies the abandonned sky.  ::)

As this Volcano ash seem to mainly affect Commercial Passenger Jet Aircraft containing fragile turbines engines, what about the use of Piston Engined, Propeller Aircraft instead?
...possibly flying at lower altitudes?

It could be vital for Air Freight very soon!

There seem to be no problem with the General Aviation, Piston Prop Aircraft which occasionally pass over my garden?

Pistons and Propellers?

Indeed the piston-fraction doesn't seem to be affected that much: several (g/a) props were still flying today, though imo not as many as on a usual sunny saturday.

The question would be: does an a/c pistonengine have an airfilter like all cars have? I'd guess so... Only problem could be the pitot-tube then. And as stated in our lokal newspaper, the cloud manly affects heights above 6000 ft (or was it meters? And again confuzzlement about metric/imperial system). So low 'n slow should be perfect today - don't forget to entertain the flight controllers as they might be bored...

Yep...

Piston Prop Aero engines do contain Air Filters on the air intake to their Carburettors, like motor cars, etc, and are easily cleaned/replaced.

I would have thought that the Volcano dust would not have affected the Air Filters (clogging-up) any more seriously than Dust Storms, Sand Storms, etc, down nearer ground level.

The images should generally be up to 3 years old. I believe the 'pro' edition of Earth and the Enterprise edition just gives you higher resolution prints and movie modes or something like that.

Live streaming would cost more than a $400 license I'm sure  ;D

1. Captain, if the problem is not entered into the technical logbook.........then the aircraft does not have a problem.
2. And, if you have time to write the fault on a napkin and attach to it to the yoke.........you have time to write it in the tech log....see point 1.
